Oh poutine… fries, topped with cheese curds and topped again with gravy. No dish more Canadian than this delicious carb-laden monstrosity of an assault on everything we know about healthy eating. While I’m thrilled with how I’m doing on the Keto diet; every so often, I get the siren-song craving for poutine. Cue my Keto Air Fryer Poutine that only takes 5 minutes to prep and one bowl to clean!
Unfortunately, few, if any, restaurants offer low-carb poutine. It was the twin-forces of my desire to eat poutine with the least amount of hassle that allowed me to formulate my Keto Air Fryer Poutine recipe that can be cooked in one bowl in the air fryer.
Poutine by itself is actually quite keto-friendly – if not for the fries. So in this recipe, I replace potato french fries with fries made with rutabaga, and the rest is history!
What you’ll need is an Air Fryer (an appliance I use extensively as a lazy cook), and a stainless steel bowl (stainless steel bowls are heatsafe). I have an older Gourmia Air fryer and love it. The closet model I can find nowadays is quite a bit more advanced, but similar in design.
Whatever air fryer you use, just check the internal dimensions of the air fryer and see if you can find a stainless steel bowl that fits inside of it. Using a stainless steel bowl will save you heaps of cleaning, and likely make your air fryer one of your favourite kitchen appliances to use.
For those of you unfamiliar with poutine, the type of cheese you need to use is a special kind of cheese curd, sometimes conveniently labelled “poutine cheese” or sometimes as “squeaky cheese” If you’re in the United States, you can order this cheese off Amazon. In Canada, you can buy the cheese curds in most groceries stores and at Costco as well.
In keeping with the lazy nature of this recipe (and my overall philosophy when it comes to cooking) I also elect to use a canned poutine gravy. I prefer St. Hubert Poutine gravy which follows the recipe used in the ubiquitous St. Hubert restaurants in Montreal. You can buy this gravy in most larger grocery stores in Canada. If you can’t find this brand of gravy, just choose a canned, mixed or homemade gravy of your choice.

Keto Air Fryer Poutine
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 1.5 – 2 cups Rutabaga sliced into french fries (Approximately 1 small rutabaga, or half of 1 large rutabaga)
- 1.5 tbsp Olive Oil
- 0.5 tbsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Paprika
- 1/4 tsp Pepper
- 60 grams Cheese Curds
- 1/4 cup Poutine Gravy (I'm lazy so I just use a canned poutine gravy)
Instructions
- Peel your rutabaga and cut into fries. One small rutabaga or half of a large rutabaga will yield approximately 1.5 – 2 cups of rutabaga french fries.
- Mix rutabaga fries, olive oil, onion powder, salt, pepper and paprika in a bowl, and mix to coat fries well. Place the coated fries into your air fryer. Pro-tip for lazy cooks: if you have a stainless steel bowl that fits inside of your air fryer, use this bowl, and place the entire bowl containing the coated fries into the air fryer. This will make this a one-bowl recipe saving you the hassle of having to wash your air fryer afterwards.
- Set your air fryer to 370F and run it for 12 minutes.
- After 12 minutes, turn your fries, and set them back in the air fryer for another 10 minutes at 370F
- After 10 minutes, your fries are done! If you're using the one-bowl method, place your cheese curds directly over the fries in your stainless steel bowl and drizzle gravy over your fries and cheese. Place back into the air fryer at 260F for 3 minutes to melt the cheese and heat up the gravy. If you're not using the one-bowl method, you can take the fries out of the air fryer and place them on an oven-safe plate, then place the cheese and gravy over top, and place in oven at 260F for 5-10 minutes to melt the cheese and heat up the gravy.
